Catering

You are here:

They say variety is the spice of life and it most certainly is in the catering department at Ravenscliffe High School. Since the school declared catering independence from the Local Authority in April 2012, our mission statement has been clear; to provide a healthy variety of foods to hopefully improve both the education and the lifestyle of our students. In the intervening 6+ years the Catering Team have managed to achieve this and more and Ravenscliffe holds a national ad international  reputation for school meal excellence.

Meet the Team

In April 2012, the school took the brave step to move away from outside catering and go in-house with its school meals provision. A key part of this was the appointment of Tony Mulgrew, formerly of Todmorden High School, whose remit was to revamp and revolutionise school meals at Ravenscliffe. Tony Mulgrew’s name is synonymous nationally with healthy eating and the championing of local produce. He was a key driving force behind the Incredible Edible movement in Todmorden and has achieved a large number of national achievements and qualifications. We always hoped he would mirror his success in Todmorden and raise catering standards at Ravenscliffe to the same high level and are pleased to confirm that he has more than achieved this aspiration. Tony received the BBC Cook of the Year award in 2014 beating over 6,000 other nominees to this prestigious award.

Tony works with Dee, Paula, Michelle, Katie and Ashley in the school kitchens at Ravenscliffe and also at Woodbank Primary School in Halifax; one of our partner feeder schools. Our catering staff are the familiar faces that our students and staff recognise behind the counter. They have shown great commitment to the school in recent years and they play a vital role in driving the school's catering provision forward.

Ashley is and ex-student currently employed as a trainee chef and kitchen assistant. You can read about his journey here

The Mission

  • To give pupils and the wider community the opportunity to acquire basic skills in planning, preparing and cooking healthy meals and an understanding of basic hygiene.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to eat and cook with vegetables that they have grown themselves.
  • To create an enjoyable and sociable dining experience for students in school and a lively food culture within the school and the wider community.
  • To ensure pupils and staff receive nutritious, fresh, local and organic food at lunch and throughout the school day and that this food is delicious, seasonal, affordable and safe.

Our Suppliers

The Catering Team at Ravenscliffe are committed to providing healthy, tasty, sustainable and ethical meals for the Ravenscliffe Community. As part of this pledge, we only use local, sustainable food producers. We feel that using local suppliers ensures the long term sustainability of food production, and also has a positive financial impact on the local economy. Where possible we always try to source organic produce, produced to the very highest ethical standards.
