As a dedicated special school, our entire site is accessible to those who use wheelchairs. This includes our main school building, pavilion and extensive gardens. Moreover, overhead and manual hoists are fitted and available throughout the site, and we have a number of fully accessible, DDA compliant, changing suites.
More specifically, in order to offer an innovative, exciting and personalised curriculum to our students we utilise a wide range of specialist and adapted facilities alongside traditional classroom bases. They help to fully meet the individual needs of each student.
Our Hydrotherapy Pool was refurbished in 2011 at a cost of £250,000 with the help of BT and The Lords Taverners. It offers an environment in which to develop, for our more able students, early water confidence and swimming skills. Students often use the Hydrotherapy Pool as a stepping stone to further developing their swimming off-site at Halifax Pool. For our students with more complex needs, the pool offers a soothing, relaxing and stimulating environment to develop mobility and receive physiotherapy.
Out of hours, the Hydrotherapy Pool is used by external companies and by the NHS, making it an important and valued community resource.
Rebound Therapy Suite
Ravenscliffe has the only Rebound Therapy Suite in Calderdale. Specifically designed to stimulate movement and mobility, the suite is centred around a full size trampoline sunk into a pit in the floor. It's primary use is to offer students with complex needs time out of their wheelchairs in a fun and exciting environment. Specially trained staff supervise all activities to ensure our students remain safe. The trampoline is also a great way for more ambulant students to let off a bit of steam and enjoy themselves in a controlled manner.
Naturally, as the only suite in Calderdale, it is in high demand and is in regular use by our feeder primary schools, the Next Step Trust and other organisations. The suite was kindly funded by the Halifax Community Bank, who donated £15,000 towards the project costs.
The school has two sensory rooms. One, located in the main building, is a black out room specially designed to benefit those with visual impairments. Our larger sensory room, located in the Pavilion, was refurbished in 2012 after the late Harry Hamer, a great friend of the school, left some money in his will.
It is state-of-the-art, featuring a ball pool, water bed, infinity tunnel, touch and sound activated panels, bubble tube and fibre-optic lighting. Importantly, the environment is fully customisable and can be controlled using wireless switches and specialist software. Our Sensory Rooms are used for 1:1 work or as whole class resources.
Sports Hall and Dance Studio
Our Sports Hall and Dance Studio not only provide a place to perform, play and learn, but also allow the whole school to come together for assemblies and meetings. Both are equipped with Audio Visual facilities, and are often hired by external organisations for conferences and training courses. These can be after-school, at weekends or, by negotiation, during the school day.
If you would like more information about our facilities, or would like to discuss hiring them for your use, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
