English at Ravenscliffe

The teaching of English at Ravenscliffe aims to equip all our pupils with the necessary skills and confidence to function as independently as possible in their lives after leaving school.  Understanding, using and responding to language in order to communicate effectively forms the core of the English curriculum but is also an integral part of all lessons. In studying English, pupils will develop skills in spoken English, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary.  Pupils will learn to become enthusiastic and critical readers and listeners of stories, poetry and drama as well as non-fiction and media texts.  Through English pupils are helped to understand how language works and using this knowledge they can choose and adapt how they respond to what they say and what they write in different situations.

Reading is the key to opening up the world to an individual and to enable them to become as independent in their life as possible. Reading enables students to access all aspects of their learning at a more independent level and creates the foundation upon which they can build and progress within their education. At Ravenscliffe we believe that every student can become a reader.

English is taught across all Keys Stages. KS3 + KS4 have 5 timetabled lessons and KS5 have 3 working towards an English accreditation.
