PE at Ravenscliffe

PE in KS3 & KS4 is taught on a weekly basis in a double lesson for all Key Stages. Each group is mixed ability with the option of developing skills further in ability based sessions.

In year 7, PE is introduced to students via three key strands (Ball Skills, Gymnastics and Athletics) which change termly. KS3 (Year 8 & 9) & KS4 lessons are taught on a carrousel basis, meaning students participate in a range of different activities throughout the year. These include Ball Skills, Gymnastics, Summer Games, Athletics, Dance, Fitness, Cycling, Swimming, Outdoor Adventurous Education (in KS4) and Rebound-, Hydro- and Physio-therapies.

All KS3 and KS4 lessons follow a consistent and structured format which consists of changing for the lesson, a warm-up activity (moving to music, stretching), the curriculum activity, a cool-down and relaxation exercise followed by showering and dressing.

In KS5 functional and enriching lessons are delivered both in and out of school and include Rambling, Health and Fitness, Cycling, Football and Duke of Edinburgh Award sessions. These lessons are largely focussed on preparing students for life beyond school, building on their interests and fostering an enjoyment of exercise.

In all PE lessons students are provided with opportunities to work on their independence and personal care skills when showering and changing. Students also access local community facilities such as the public swimming pool and gymnasium and in doing so, practise their travel training skills.

We encourage an active lifestyle through extracurricular activities, with access to use PE facilities during break and lunch time and after school clubs. There are frequent out of school opportunities to enhance and enrich students’ learning in PE. These include trips to Manchester Velodrome and Leeds Bike Park and regular competitions organised by West Yorkshire Sport and Disport. In addition, there are several residential trips throughout the key stages.
